Selcuk

Selcuk is a town that is rich in history. The area is named after the Turkish tribe which lived in the area in the 12th century called Selcuklar. Selcuk is an area very close to Ephesus, Virgin Mary’s House, the pretty town of Sirince and Pamucak Beach which is 9km away from Selcuk town centre.

The raspberry trees located next to the walking paths offer a stunning view. You should not leave Selcuk without tasting the famous ‘cop sis’ (a traditional Turkish food). Selcuk has a large number of historical places to visit. The Basilica of Saint John is a church that turned into basilica during 527 AC. Isa Bey Mosque is a mosque constructed between 1374 and 1375. This building is the finest example of the Seljukian architecture. Later on the Ottoman architecture was added to the building as well. Another important tourist destination is The Citidal of Ayasoluk. It was built in Byzantine period which consists of 15 towers of approximately 1.5 km of length each. The Citidal of Ayasoluk also has a Byzantine church and a small mosque.

Ephesus is a world famous resort that attracts a huge number of visitors each year. Ephesus used to be the commercial centre of the ancient world. Even though you can easily get the feeling of the past due to the building, churches and roads that are in perfect condition. Ephesus is also home to the Cave of Seven Sleepers. According to the research, the king did not want to allow his seven sons to turn to Christianity and the sons hided in the cave. Some believe that they slept in the cave for 200 years.

The House of Virgin Mary is very close by to Ephesus. Virgin Mary spent the final years of her life and died in this pilgrimage for Catholics.

The Temple of Artemis is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World of the ancient times. Although the major part of the historic site is in the British Museum in London, the remaining ruins and columns are grand.

Some of the other destinations that you can visit include Camlik Museum, Belevi Mausoleum, Selcuk Archaeological Museum and Turkish Bath Museum.

The nearest major airport to Selcuk is Izmir International Airport which is 60 km away. There is also a small airport called Ephesus Airport 3 km away, however this airport is only for small planes and a few number of flights from Izmir, Istanbul and Bodrum.
