Location of Turkey
Turkey has a strategic geographical location connecting Europe and Asia. It is situated in the Eastern end of Mediterranean, and has boundaries with four main seas – Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara and Black sea. Due to its location, Turkey has a great history which left marks in Turkish archaeology and museums. Persians, Macedonians and Romans were only a few that once lived in the boundaries of the Republic of Turkey. Land of Turkey was the heart of Byzantine Empire, and Istanbul (called Constantinople during Byzantine Empire) was the capital city of the empire. Majority of the archaeological sites reflect Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. Many Turkish culture and Turkish food comes from Ottoman Empire. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who is the founder of Republic of Turkey, ended the Ottoman Empire and formed a democratic country in 1923.
