Although Besiktas is a well known region who protected its features from the mythological history, it was recognized in the Byzantine Period. Various buildings, including commercial and residential, are available in the district. Greeks, Armenians and Jews lived in Koyici, which was the commercial centre of the area. Besiktas continued its popularity also in the 18th century. It was one of the two famous venues of social changes during the Tulip Revolution period. The first examples of the reconstruction of Istanbul was seen in Besiktas.
Geographical Feature of Besiktas District
It is located in the European part of Istanbul. Besiktas is situated with the Bosporus in the east, Sarıyer in the north, Sisli in the west and Beyoglu in the south. Its area is 1520 hectares.

The district has large number of commercial units. Several companies are renting or buying office and shop units in the area. The district has an important function with its 130 shopping malls, 2,000 company centres, 85 bank branches as well as Nobel and Pfızer medicine factories.

As Besiktas is located on the coastline and has a historical texture, it has the appearance of a touristic resort. Its socio-cultural life is constantly live thanks to its theatre, cinema and cultural centres. BJK Sports Club, which is one of the first football teams of Turkey, is located in this district.

Besiktas was founded in the 17th century and it was the capital city of both Byzantine and Ottoman periods. There are palaces, museums, maritime and pavilions. Besiktas is home to Cıragan Palace, Dolmabahce Palace, Yıldız Palace and Feriye Palace. In Besiktas, you can visit mosques, churches and synagogues all in the same area.
